Hotel & retreat design

The guest experience unfolds through the details of a day.

Designing a hotel, boutique property or retreat connects the guest experience with the logic of operation. Arrival, rooms, dining and outdoor spaces work alongside the services behind them, allowing a place’s character to be both immediately apparent and sustained throughout a stay.

01

Guest and place before the room count

The programme begins with the purpose of travel: a short city stay, time in nature or a visit for work. Length of stay, seasonality and service expectations influence rooms, shared spaces and support facilities. Climate, access and site characteristics are considered alongside them so the property’s character emerges from its actual place. Room count is assessed within this framework and its operating brief.

02

From the threshold to the privacy of a room

Guest experience begins on arrival and continues through finding a route, reaching a room and choosing a place to sit. Light, views, privacy and connections to terraces or landscape form this sequence. Design balances legible movement with room for rest. Within the room, furniture, storage and the relationship between its parts shape everyday use as much as the architectural image does.

03

An order the guest need not see

Guest comfort depends on staff, cleaning, supply and maintenance routes. If added late, these can conflict with guest circulation and public space. The area programme defines support functions alongside rooms, reception and dining. Service access, storage and staff movement belong within architectural design, supporting daily operation while protecting the quality of the guest experience.

04

Character sustained through operation

Materials and details must be considered under frequent use, cleaning and seasonal change. An attractive image also needs a practical maintenance assessment. Shared spaces relate to expected occupancy and their operating model. The project scope establishes the accommodation brief, architectural design and consultant coordination, making responsibilities clear and the proposed quality traceable through later decisions.
